The Discovery of the Presence of God: Devotional
Nonduality
By David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D
Reviewed: December 2006
This
is one of those books that will speak to your soul. Part hard
science, part amorphous spirituality, Dr. Hawkins—whose
book, Power
vs. Force I reviewed earlier this year—blends
the two seamlessly. His is a voice of knowing. This
man has lived his way to a state of enlightenment and one
cannot help but feel that truth in his words.
It is not, however, an easy read, as its title implies. I
recommend this book to those for whom the lighter “how
to” books have lost their substance.
I was sent the book by Dr. Hawkins’ publisher in preparation
for my radio interview with him scheduled for January 8, 2007.
Gleefully I dove into it. Several times I had to reread a
paragraph. Several times I had to go look up a word in the
dictionary. And several times, in just three chapters, tears
filled my eyes in direct response to the resonance of truth
in this wise man’s words.
As Bishop Spong, Church activist and author, says, “There’s
a difference between our experience of God and the truth of
God.” We can know only the former. The latter
is open to speculation. But reading Dr. Hawkins’ exploration
into the evolution of human consciousness (as well as his
own powerful personal story) leads me to believe that this
is a man who has conquered not only himself but also the human
equation for spiritual wholeness.
Trying to summarize the information The Discovery of
the Presence of God elucidates would be futile and frustrating:
the content is too rich. For those who wish to push their
understanding of the essence of contentment to new levels,
this one’s for you. It’ll make you wiser.
