Molecules of Emotion:
The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine
By Candace Pert, Ph.D.
Reviewed: November 2007
About
four years ago I took some time to research and ultimately
write a book on the power of words in producing emotion, which
in turn stimulate certain biochemical changes on a molecular
level. During that time I discovered Ms. Pert’s work
on neurotransmitters and the role they play in proper cellular
communication. This is particularly important in immunology,
especially the role cellular communication (those neurotransmitters)
play in the fight against AIDS, an area in which Ms. Pert’s
work has played a ground-breaking role.
Ms. Pert was included in the hit cult film “What the
Bleep Do We Know?” as well as the work of Dr. Masaru
Emoto, another leading edge researcher studying the effect
of emotion (vibration) on substance, in particular water.
Though his research began from a desire to address pollution
issues in Japan, since the human being is comprised of 90%
water, the molecular crystalline effects Dr. Emoto was able
to observe in his experiments involving human feelings suggests
the ultimate accountability: Humans can alter molecules—both
within themselves, and in others!
In Molecules of Emotion, the reader is not only informed,
but also entertained, an important aspect for any aspiring
scientific author to remember. Ms. Pert weaves the discovery
of the neurotransmitter around the maypole of her own story,
providing the necessary back story to the science: Why did
she care? Where did the idea come from? What exactly can this
information do for me, the reader, as an individual? Or as
a member of the larger community of man?
She posits the notion that we can become “addicted”
to certain feelings often putting ourselves in situations
where we will get to feel those specific feelings. This is
a cutting edge approach to change in this day of positive
thinking. She makes a strong case that positive feeling is
a more productive route.
Through a different window, Ms. Pert is viewing the same
landscape Emoto sees. And it’s one where we have the
power, the right, indeed the duty, to understand and harness
the power of our own emotions. To do so is the ultimate step
in human empowerment.
