How: Why How We Do Anything Means Everything...
in Business (and in Life)
By Dov Seidman
Reviewed: October 2007

Whew! Want to read a book that despite wanting to put down, you don’t? Then this is for you.

My sister, a priest who has been nominated to become a bishop in the Episcopalian Church, recommended this book to me saying that she knew little about leadership she hadn’t learned on the job the past 20 years and she thought it would be a good idea to broaden her horizons.
It’s that kind of thinking that makes a difference—or a Bishop.

Expertly researched and beautifully written, the author explains in readable language not only why we think the way we do as human beings, but also how we got to that point. Group-think.

Seidman details the 1% factor that distinguishes those people (and businesses) who flourish and those that languish. Across the board the way we conduct ourselves, in business and in life—the how we do what we do—determines who wins. “The tapestry of human behaviour is so diverse, so rich, so global that it presents a rare opportunity, the opportunity to outbehave the competition.” (author’s italics). Trust and the ability to instill it lies at the heart of the matter; I was gratified to read that.

There’s way too much detailed info to begin to try to synthesize what’s between the covers. It’s a great book. Not only did I learn a lot about my own field of study as it over-laps leadership development, I found I wanted to keep reading. Even with the charts and graphs (few) the content is so interesting that the reader is completely engaged from the first word.

Published in 2007, How is creating a buzz from those who have read it. It gets you thinking. Mr. Seidman says he “focuses on how companies and their people can operate in both a principled and profitable way.” He thinks you can be both. After reading his book, I believe him.

Pick this book up and you’ll finish it smarter than when you started it.
